The refuge’s vast coastal plain spreads out north of the Brooks Range. The hundred-mile long plain supports nearly 200 wildlife species, including thousands of caribou and snow geese. The fossil fuels beneath the tundra place this 1.5 million acre swath of the refuge at the center of a national debate about oil exploration.
