Although an unwary predator would suffer from a mouthful of quills, Arctic wolves, foxes and wolverines have learned to flip the porcupine over and expose its unprotected belly. Hollow quills give these animals the buoyancy to swim across the Sheenjek River, where this portrait was taken.
